Governor Pat Quinn has taken the first step towards large-scale government layoffs and the closure of several state facilities on Thursday. The goal is to cut budgets and increase pressure on state legislators to approve more money for the operation of state facilities. CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - Quinn has said he will pink slip as many as 1,900 workers and close a prison, a juvenile detention center, three homes for mentally ill patients and two centers for the developmentally disabled. Quinn hopes that by putting facilities for high-risk people on the list, it will pressure lawmakers to grant his request.
Thus far, lawmakers have not indicated they plan to concede to Quinn.
