The ban is expected to make the roads safer, and more fair.
The Chicago City Council is cracking down on bicyclists who text while riding.

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - The City Council passed the new ordinance today which prohibits bicyclists from texting while moving. They are also forbidden to make cell phone calls unless they have a hands-free device.

The ordinance passed unanimously and will go into effect next month.

Fines for violators will start at $20 for the first offense and didn't go up to $100 for subsequent violations. If the bicyclists is involved in an accident the fine could be as much as $500.

The City Council believes this is an issue of fairness as well as safety, since motorists are already prohibited from texting and calling while driving.
