Parking here? Make sure your permit is valid or it may cost you.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Wednesday that he was introducing an ordinance to crack down on those who illegally use disabled placards for parking.

The plan will increase fines for any driver caught displaying a fake, stolen, or altered placard and sets those penalties between $500 and $1,000.

Any driver who is caught using such a placard could also have their car impounded which carries an additional fine of $2,000.

Karen Tamley, Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of People with Disabilities said that the availability of disabled parking "has long been a serious issue for the disability community."
