Blagojevich says he has a substance abuse program. Critics cry foul because it could shorten his sentence.
Convicted former Governor Rod Blagojevich is asking to enroll in a substance abuse program at a Federal Prison in Denver, Colorado. If he enrolls and completes the program successfully, he could shave up to a year off his sentence.

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - Blagojevich's lawyers are downplaying the request amid accusations that Blagojevich is trying to "game" the system.

At no point has the former governor made public any struggling issues with substance abuse. He does, however have a reputation of gaming systems.

According to the program, inmates must have a verifiable substance abuse program, which can be as little as consuming 5 alcoholic beverages a week prior to incarceration.

Blagojevich will not be considered for the program until a few years before his scheduled release.
