Chicago cab drivers will now face new rules designed to increase safety and quality.
The City Council has approved new regulations for taxis on Wednesday. The new regulations are expected to improve safety and monitor the industry more closely.

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - The new rules will restrict taxi drivers to 12 hour workdays and cab companies will be required to keep detailed records on how long each driver is on the road.

Fines will be imposed for violators. The fines have been raised from $1,000 to $,5,000.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has endorsed the regulations saying that it was time to "tackle the issue."

In addition to the changes adopted on Wednesday, other changes may be in the works. Cab drivers may soon be more closely tracked with GPS and prompt reporting of any tickets they are issued.
