Illinois Governor Pat Quinn wishes to eliminate the state's contributions toward health insurance benefits for retired teachers and professors.
CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - The cut is part of a budget proposal that Quinn unveiled last week. The plan would also cut the budgets of most state agencies as well as close prisons and mental institutions to save money.
The cuts would affect retired teachers but would save the state about $92 million. Educators argue that the change would add to their struggles as they only receive an average of $43,000 a year.
"The unfortunate thing is most people don't need medical services when they are young. They need them when they are retired, and increasingly so," said Gary Elmen, president of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. "They would be forced to make a decision between eating and being able to afford insurance."
