Red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service

Although some grasses have sprouted, there's still a lot of fuel out there.
The National Weather Service has issued a "red flag warning" for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana from noon until 7 p.m. due to the warm, dry, and windy weather and how the weather "will become favorable for rapid growth of wildfires."

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - During spring and fall, red flag warnings are very common. Although spring has caused many plants to bloom and grow beautifully, there are still a lot of dry, dead plants around.

Kevin Birk, a weather service meteorologist, said "I don't want to say that it's not dry out there, because although some grasses have sprouted, there's still a lot of fuel out there. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential."

Red flag warnings have been seen several times this spring due to the record-breaking warm weather and dry conditions in March.

Today, the warning includes most of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
