Police departments (like the SFPD in this photo) are using a variety of sensors to help track and fight crime.
Chicago Police Superintendant Garry McCarthy told reporters today the department is using microphones to detect gunshots in violent neighborhoods.

CHICAGO, IL (Catholic Online) - The sensors have been working since September 1 and are installed in the Englewood, Chicago Lawn, Harrison and Grand Crossing districts.

McCarthy said the sensors have already allowed police to nab two felons.

He also says he expect the contract to expand.

According to ShotSpotter, the company that manufactures the sensors, they can differentiate between fireworks, backfires, and gunshots. They also filter out conversations.

At this time, they do not appear to present a significant privacy concern.
